Karen Zimmerman

10th Public Ghost Investigation!

Saturday October 15, 2016

6:00 PM

Guests joined Karen Zimmerman, an experienced ghost investigator and author, and her fellow investigators in searching for evidence of spirits within the Pardee Home Museum. Karen's book - Ghost Stories and Legends of Alameda, Berkeley, and Oakland - contains an entire chapter on the Pardee Home. In her several investigations here, she has recorded several EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenon).       Click here for sample EVP.

A spirit circle was held up in the cupola.

Karen's team has recently been experimenting with the Xcam SLS camera by Digital Dowsing. The camera's images have been interpreted by some to show spirits through a combination of light, thermal signals, and ultrasonics. Others describe them as anomalies or potential areas of interest. Our volunteers served a wonderful array of food and drinks to the participants midway through the event.

Karen and the other investigators generously donated their services to the Pardee Home for this investigation. All of the money from ticket sales went to the Pardee Home.

Performance of "The Birds"

Ten curtain times beginning Friday October 21, 2016

8:00 PM

Diane and Nat are strangers, trapped in a house in the countryside. If they leave they risk being attacked, their eyes pecked out and their bodies left to rot. They must find a way to survive, to escape their prison even as the secrets and lies between them grow deeper and more deadly.

Blue Panther Productions in association with Symmetry Theatre Company presented the Bay Area Premiere of "The Birds," Conor McPherson's adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier's classic thriller. McPherson's (The Seafarer) tense, claustrophobic adaptation will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Alfred Hitchcock fans will love this edgier version, which includes elements of his iconic 1963 horror film.

Directed by Chloe Bronzan, starring Martha Brigham*, Kevin Kieta, Laura Lundy and Robert Parsons*. "The Birds" had an exclusive, 3-weekend run in the carriage house of the Pardee Home Museum, a part of the estate rarely open to the public.

"The Birds" was presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service Inc, New York.

Hear Here a Talk about Their "There"

Sunday June 19, 2016

4:00 PM

Gertrude and Alice by San Francisco Artist John Keating

On Sunday, June 19th, 4:00 pm in the Carriage House, Hans Gallas spoke in the Carriage House at the Pardee Home Museum. Mr. Gallas is a respected expert on the life of Oakland-reared Gertrude Stein and her longtime partner, Alice B. Toklas.

This was an exciting event with Mr. Gallas talking about books and ephemera in his collection. He left selected pieces to be displayed as a small exhibition at the Pardee Home Museum for viewing during teas and tours for a six week period.

A champagne and hors d'oeuvres buffet followed the presentation.

Let there be Light

Sunday November 1, 2015

3:00 PM

The Pardee Home Museum will host a series of lectures inviting the public's participation in "The Governor's Decorative Arts Guild."

The series began with the first event: "Let there be light" and was moderated by curator Paul Motter, who gave a history of the evolution of lighting from Colonial American through Victorian and Edwardian times. Devices from candlesticks to kerosene lamps to the advent of electricity, with the original heirlooms belonging to this distinguished family, were featured. While the home---an Italianate Victorian built in 1868--is one of the greatest architectural and historical treasures of Northern California, the contents of this house, home to two Oakland mayors and a Governor of California, contains artifacts and decorative accessories from throughout the world. This ongoing series will feature other important pieces: art, antique furniture, silver, fine china, scrimshaw, and personal items (books, ephemera, letters). Immediately following the lectures, tours will be available and the afternoon will end with refreshments; an array of table hors d'oeuvres; elegant and delicious. Cost of each event is $25 per person and seating is limited, so make your reservation promptly!

These offerings to the public are in keeping with the museum's original mission: to preserve and interpret the historic Pardee family residence, including its gardens and collections, for the education and enjoyment of the citizens of Oakland and the greater Bay Area, and for visitors from throughout the nation and world. Call 510.381.1973 to be part of this exciting new series.

Music at the Pardee Home
June Tours Featured Special Music
In June 2010, visitors were treated to unique sounds that draw on the real and imagined history of the Pardee Home.

These musical scores were composed by Floor Vahn and curated by Christian Frock in collaboration with Mills College's "Here and Now" series. The music was inspired by historic Oakland architecture of the late 1800's and were designed for specific areas of the Pardee Home.
